DescriptionTitle: 裏切りの少女 ~ Judas Kiss
Artist: CASTER
Circle: South of Heaven
Album: 東方鋼鉄魔
Original: 裏切りの少女 ~ Judas Kiss (Treacherous Maiden ~ Judas Kiss)

While reviving this fragment of the playlist, the PC-98 festa I came across with this album, and I decided to give it a second chance before I completly lost my hopes on the South of Heaven circle.
There was a huge difference when I listened this on my high quality headphones rather than in the computer speakers. By some reason, after I experienced this I've decided that perhaps my judgement on South Of Heaven (particularly CASTER) it has been to harsh, and after you get used to the somewhat loud drums you will enjoy of a very great experience in Touhou Metal like any other.

Anyway, the PC-98 era not only enjoys of a great storyline and wonderful music, but it also has some characters that can be considered the predecessors of some current characters that enjoy of great popularity.
Mai is clearly one of this characters. The way she looks clearly suggest there are at least 2 characters that can look like her, and even being misunderstood at times.

When it is mentioned that Mai is a White Witch, with the ability of manipulating ice, it is clear that Mai could be the very first idea for Cirno. Not precisely created as a character that needed to evolve more, but perhaps ZUN decided to revive her on the windows era by adding a certain personality that would charm most of Touhou fans. It is a strong coincidence also that Mai also has a phrase were she claims to be the stronger above her partner Yuki. While this is a mere coincidence, and it isn't her catch phrase, we can conclude there is perhaps no intention whatsoever of just re-skining Mai into what we know today as Cirno.

The curious thing about Mai, is her theme. While she isn't a very popular character, her theme song enjoys of a certain popularity among many other PC-98 songs. It's catchy, and the lead pretty much stuck in your head for about an hour past you heard the damn song (I have been signing this song the whole day). Perhaps it also enjoys of those distinctive sounds and charm that made many of us fell in love of the PC-98 era.

Besides that, how can you say "no" to a theme with an epic name such as "Treacherous Maiden ~ Judas Kiss".
Quoting from Touhou Wikia, I extracted some information about this:

"Mai's personality and theme song name may be a reference to the ninth circle of Hell in the Divine Comedy, which represents the treacherous sin with the frozen river named Cocyte, where the biblical traitor Judas Iscariot is being tortured for all eternity."

It is such a shame that all this construction is only meant to be for one minor character on the Touhou storyline, as both the theme song and personality based on the Divine Comedy suits more like a fallen angel kind of baddie that tries to summon apocalypse over all us, or perhaps I'm just too used to Gothic and dark characters, with no freedom of being funny.

However, "Judas Kiss" is such an extremely good name for a metal band. Mark my words, this title will stuck forever in your head.

Thanks for watching.
