TitleWaltz of an Eastern Country (Eng subtitles)

DescriptionThis video, by doujin circle Butaotome, is a clever imitation of the usual style of videos on NHK's very popular music program spot "Minna no Uta," which features family-oriented music and animated videos, sometimes drawn and sometimes produced in other styles, like the claymation of this video. More well-known examples in the west may be Makoto Shinkai's video for "Egao," or "Waltz of the Moon", which we also translated once upon a time.

This song is about Maribel Hearn, who lives in the outside world. She sleeps a lot, and sometimes, she dreams of Gensokyo. She and her friend Renko run the Sealing Club, which investigates the borders between this world and others. She can perceive those borders, and between that, her appearance, and her sleepiness, she is quite reminiscent of Yukari Yakumo, the youkai of borders in Gensokyo. This song is based on Yukari's theme, Necrofantasia.

(PS. One might also point out that "Yakumo" and "Hearn" are both last names of one Lafcadio Hearn, a 19th century author who moved to Japan and wrote, among other things, collections of ghost stories.)

(PPS. The Junior Pig Choir does not actually exist.)
